The Wolf's (Un)Lucky Fae Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,173 ratings

Call it fate, call it luck, but when a powerful wolf shifter walks into my life, everything changes.

Bel

I’ve made some stupid decisions in my life, and one in particular keeps coming back to haunt me. When I keep running into a handsome stranger, I know I should push him away, if only to keep him safe from my mess, keep him safe from me. But something inside of me—my heart, my magic, or my soul—keeps pushing me toward him, offering to make all my secret dreams come true. And I don’t know how to stay away.

Remi

When I travel across the world to open a new business—and get away from my overbearing family—the last thing I ever expect is to find the most beautiful and alluring fae I’ve ever met. I’m drawn to him, and I’m pretty sure if he lets his guard down, he’ll admit he’s drawn to me too. All I want to do is pull Bel into my arms and protect him from whatever he’s hiding. But he’s skittish and suspicious, and I just want to prove to him that he can trust me.

Fate, and a bit of luck, brought us together, and I’m not going to let it or anything else tear us apart.

The Wolf’s (Un)Lucky Fae is a part of the multi-author series, Fortune Favors the Fae. From spicy to sweet, zany romps to epic adventures, there’s something for everyone in this mystical series. Discover destiny and true love and follow the coin on its fickle journey to the next world and a new magical adventure.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

To be totally honest I was probably at least 90% through this book before it won me over. Were it not part of an extended series, I might have even set it down.

Through much of the book, the one character’s insecurities are so overplayed that it felt almost pointless to continue reading.

But the final sections of the book, beginning with the lead up into the “final battle,” wholly redeemed the entire affair such that I am forced to give it five stars, now. That’s pretty damn impressive, if I do say so myself, and I am not that easily impressed.

The story is really quite good, and I have to give Notaro major props for that. It’s the writing that left me wanting more. It’s not bad, it’s just very simplistic, more reminiscent of young adult fiction, which this certainly is not by any means, then the more polished writing I was expecting.

The writing didn’t change in that final portion, but the story overwhelmed anything negative that I might have to say, and quite honestly, was sufficient to move me to tears. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better/worse, when the parents showed up at the end, the tears flowed even more freely. That was NOT appreciated in the slightest since I had already run out of tissue.

Ms Notaro, please visualize me sticking my tongue out at you with a big fecal-eating grin on my face. Thank you for a wonderfully moving story! I’ll be sure to stay glued to your work, and I look forward to seeing your evolution as a writer, which is sure to occur until your writing matches your storytelling talent, because that is inevitable. One might even say fated! ***grin***

One last point…. Very near the book’s end the seed of a new mystery is planted and I am damn certainly expecting a resolution in some future book. Just saying! Hehe

Michele Notaro is one of those authors that has made me weep uncontrollably in a public space because a brutal scene. So going into this I figured I was going to be completely emotionally wrecked. I did get fairly close to that outcome but thankfully no one died that I didn’t want to see die.

The best thing about this world and being able to time skip is that all out magical friends have a long life so we can see characters like Remi our wolf boy fully grown up. Getting to see him working with his fathers Ailin and Sebastien who were the main focus of the original series. I liked getting to see this book branch out into other countries in the world as, while I love Brinnswick, the land is too set up for justice and a new land gives Remi room to make it a better place.

Getting to know Bel was one of the best parts about this book as he is a fresh face with a tragic backstory. Living on the streets and selling his glamour ability just so that his cousins don’t loose their home. He wants to trust but only has it in him to trust his cousins and his vampire friend that owns the 24 hour bookstore. Also side note now i want to open a 24 hour bookstore as that sounds like an absolute dream. I really appreciated watching Bel’s journey to learning to trust Remi and being heartbroken that he had to stab Remi in the back. The scene where he is crying and broken in the museum about betraying Remi got me tearing up and wanting to comfort the purple haired fae.

The distrust of the fae in this country is abhorrent and I hope when we get Tan’s book where and the dragon king become viramore that he makes a change to treatment of fae kind.

I love a multi author series so much. And this one is packed with some of my favorite authors. This one takes us back to the Ellwood/Brinswick world of Michelle Notaro. It isn’t necessary to have read those books to enjoy this one. It would just give you background on Remi’s very powerful family. (I love Seb and Ailin.) This story was so good! Poor Bel. Of course Remi is too perfect for words. He is an Ellwood!

I typically enjoy this author’s works but, while I did like this plot, I feel this book didn’t quite hit the mark. The characters and their goal were introduced well but the middle half of the book was mostly a rehash (same problem expressed just in varying situations) with no new information provided. In other books this author has used that time to provide insight into the talents and capabilities (and some history) of each character. Here, while we learn a bit about Remi and his business partners, we never see how they pool talents to solve problems despite being told they do that so well their business surpasses others in the field. Additionally there is little explained about the country they are in, other than the obvious set up for 2 future books. I did like seeing some characters from previous books but they too were only shallowly written. Overall this book wasn’t a waste of time to read, but I hope that the future 2 books resurrect the detail this author typically provides.

Great characters and original story, which is refreshing. The repetitiveness of her writing became really annoying. If Remi mentioned how much he loved Bel one more time, I was going to scream. Please don’t beat our heads like that. We get it. The phrase “couldn’t help but” was overused. 34 times. It’s not creative and after that many times, it’s awful. How about “ I was drawn to”? Or “I felt” or…lots of other options.

I’m loving these whimsical stories of the fae coin. This was the second book and a great read. It had engaging characters and a well developed storyline. Of course it also had a sweet romance and a HEA. I’ve already preordered Tan and that dragon’s story. The only downer is it won’t be released until October. Oh well! That’s the way the cookie crumbles at least it won’t keep me up all night reading until then. 😇

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Cinderfella style romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 13, 2024
I haven't kept up with the Ellwood series, but it was easy to read this as a standalone.

A romance between a nice kind guy from a successful large family and good friends and his own business, meets a homeless Fae he is immediately enamoured with in a new country where discrimination against the Fae is rife. Because of their societal disparities the Fae is distrusting and wary and doesn't take him seriously but sees him as a potential threat.

I loved the interplay between Bel and Remi and how it slowly changed and grew, giving all the warm and fluffy vibes. I am a big fan of found family stories.

Along the way the issues around homelessness, parental loss, exploitation, discrimination etc are lightly explored but the main focus is how they affect Bel's actions and character with regards to the romance plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fated mates, learning to trust, falling in love
Reviewed in Canada on June 8, 2024
4.5/5 I had lots of feels with this one. Bel was stuck in a crappy situation, and it was so nice to see him learn that Remi could be trusted. I liked how respectful Remi was while still wanting every good thing for Bel. I enjoyed seeing them get closer to one another and dancing around the idea of viramore. We’ve got a solid fated mate trope but also lots of time for them to get to know one another. I loved how solid Remi’s trust is. I hope that there’s continued improvements to how fae are treated, because it’s pretty rough. I like Remi’s way more egalitarian approach, and I sure hope it spreads.

It was fun to spend time with the Ellwoods again. (Not sure if it would be overwhelming for someone who hasn’t read any of the other books. I thought they worked well as side characters/family here without needing to know all the background. But for those who have read them, lots of familiar faces popping in occasionally.)

I look forward to the two upcoming books by Michelle, as this one definitely made me want to see what happens to those two other pairs, while also being happy to head off with the coin to the next adventure in this series.

I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.
